Research at CSALT in robotic fabrication of retrofit panels enters year 2

Working with industry partner, ABB Robotics, Dr. Boyle and her lab are entering the exciting second year of a successful Mitacs Accelerate grant that supports Masters Thesis student, Adonis Lau in a research project entitled, “Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DfMA) for Architects with Industrial Robots.” The research explores the complex interface that exists between the deformation of an existing building and the rectilinear form of new construction or finished facades. Building upon a year of critical software research and digital design methodology, the research will now enter testing and fabrication concepts to construct modular retrofit units fitted for existing buildings using robotics. The work will be modelled at smaller scale using our ABB GoFa CRB 15000 collaborative robots controlled by COMPAS_RRC software developed at ETH Zürich by our collaborator, Philippe Fleischmann and his excellent colleagues. Our combination of collaborative robots powered by the OmniCore controller from ABB, gripper support from Schunk and exploration of non-uniform material dimensions from Baumer are giving Adonis Lau the tools he needs to investigate options that can later be explored at full scale.
